Blizzard Warning Up For The TX Panhandle

A winter storm blanketing the central Plains has dumped several inches of snow and shut down roads throughout West Texas and the Panhandle.

The National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning for all of Monday in much of the region. It forecasts as much as 12 to 18 inches of snow in and near Amarillo, with the rest of the area between 6 to 14 inches.

Wind gusts up to 65 mph are creating whiteout conditions.

The Texas Department of Transportation has closed Interstate 40 westbound from New Mexico to Oklahoma, and Interstate 27 between Amarillo and Lubbock. Spokesman Paul Braun says all roads in the Panhandle are considered impassable. Residents are warned to stay inside unless absolutely necessary.

Texas Tech and many local schools have canceled classes.
