APD To Enforce No-Refusal For Fat Tuesday

The Austin Police Department says they will be enforcing a no-refusal DWI initiative this Tuesday for Mardi Gras.

It will start Tuesday at 9 p.m. and go until 5 a.m. the next morning.

No-refusal means that DWI suspects that refuse to voluntarily give a breath or blood specimen will have blood drawn for testing anyway.

Those found to have a blood alcohol concentration of .15 or above will be charged with a Class A Misdemeanor, which carries a maximum sentence of one year confinement in jail and a $4,000 fine for the first time offenders.

APD says about 24 percent of last year's traffic fatalities were alcohol related.
