Slain Prosecutor Took On Aryan Brotherhood, Mexican Drug Cartel

Investigators are reviewing the cases of a Kaufman County prosecutor after a gunman killed him Thursday.

Kaufman County Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse had made an aggressive push against the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas.
In November, the U.S. Department of Justice credited Hasse with helping indict 34 alleged members of the Aryan brotherhood, including many high ranking leaders.

"If, in fact, this turns out to be the assassination of a prosecutor by the Aryan brotherhood of Texas, we are about to see a war begin," senior fellow with the Southern Poverty Law Center Mark Potok said.

He called the Aryan Brotherhood the country's largest and most violent prison gang.

The Justice Department's indictment accuses members of the gang with murder, kidnapping, assault, narcotics distribution and weapons trafficking.

Hasse also prosecuted a case involving a Mexican drug cartel, after an 18 wheeler loaded with cocaine was stopped with broken tail light.
When Kaufman County Justice of the Peace Eric Williams was accused of corruption, Hasse aggressively pursued the case, winning a conviction for theft.

Investigators say Hasse had not received any recent threats.

Kaufman is about 30 miles southeast of Dallas.
