Details Emerge After Bastrop County Animal Shelter Director Arrested
Bastrop's embattled animal services director is speaking out about her weekend arrest. Diane Mollaghan is accused of backing into a police car while allegedly driving drunk.
The arrest comes just weeks after volunteers accused Mollaghan of mismanaging the shelter -- putting the animals at risk.
Mollaghan is fighting to keep her job. The Bastrop Animal Services Director is out on bond and back at work -- following her second arrest for driving while intoxicated.
"I still feel I have the confidence to run the shelter," said Mollaghan.
But that confidence may be lacking.
"It burdens us greatly," said Bastrop County Judge Paul Pape.
Bastrop County Commissioners will be meeting with the human resources director this week to discuss Mollaghan's ability to run the animal shelter -- in light of her recent arrest.
"I'm very concerned about any county employee who would be arrested for DWI," added Pape.
The 40-year old was arrested Saturday night after employees at the bar said she left drunk.
"It appeared to us she had been drinking prior to her arrival here. We refused service to her," said Michael Candelario.
Candelario is the owner of Bastrop Brewhouse. He claims staffers even offered to give Mollaghan a ride home -- but she refused.
A short time later, Mollaghan crashed into a guardrail and backed into a police cruiser. The arresting officer said Mollaghan was so intoxicated he couldn't perform a field sobriety test.
Mollaghan remains mum on the criminal charges.
"I'm not going to comment right now," said Mollaghan.
According to the arrest report Mollaghan did submit to a blood specimen. That blood specimen has been send to the Texas Department of Public Safety crime lab for drug and alcohol analysis.
Bastrop commissioners plan to hold a special meeting on Friday to discuss Mollaghan's employment.
