Waste Piles Burning Near Austin Airport

A 1-alarm brush fire broke out just northeast of the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport Monday afternoon as winds of up to 50 mph blew through Central Texas.

It happened at around 3 p.m. in the 2200 block of South FM 973 -- inside the City of Austin Hornsby Bend Biosolids Management Plant.

Large mulch piles have caught on fire, according to city officials, and no structures are in danger.

Officials say the fires aren't going to be extinguished anytime soon because of the strong winds.

The facility produces Dillo Dirt -- the byproduct of the waste water treatment process which is then used as fertilizer. Numerous large piles up to 30 feet high caught fire.

Authorities say the fires have been contained to one area of the plant about a mile and a half from the entrance.
