Protestors Rally Against XL Pipeline

A large group of protesters rallied in front of the Whole Foods downtown location Sunday afternoon. The group protested the Keystone XL Pipeline that would carry oil from Canada to the Texas Gulf Coast. The rally was formed by 200 people from different organizations who said the pipeline is environmentally toxic.

Construction has already begun on the southern portion of the pipeline, but the northern route has yet to be approved by President Obama. The protesters said they do not want the other half approved and claim the pipeline is a “scam.”

The protestors chose the Whole Foods location because they said its CEO John Mackey recently stated climate change is “not that big a deal.”

Chris Wilson with Stop Tar Sands in Austin said the oil that will come out of the pipeline will all be exported and none of it will stay in the United States.

“We don't want a toxic pipeline coming through Texas,” Wilson said. This type of pipeline has had a lot of spills.”
