Several Houston-Area School Employees Arrested

In the past two days, two school employees in the Houston area were charged with improper relationships with students.

At Spring High School, Assistant Principal Mark West, 30, is accused of having sex with a female student in his office.  He resigned Friday.

Police arrested Maria Calvillo, a nurse's aide in the Alief School District.  Police say she had sex with a 12th grader.

"You know I wish it surprised us more often, but it seems like it's happening time and time again," Robert Sanborn said.

He is an activist for children and education and president of the non-profit think tank, Children at Risk.

His staff tracks cases of improper relationship between educator and student, among other things.

"We have to understand that this is a special trusting relationship," he says. "When parents send our kids to school, we expect that things are going to be OK, and we can't have any of these shenanigans going on."

Sanborn says 156 similar cases were filed with the Texas Education Agency last year.

Other recent incidents in the Houston area:
--Amanda Feenstra, former Humble High School dance director, accused of sleeping with and stalking one of her former students.
--Jaime Page, Sante Fe High School art teacher, accused of sending a student nude photos.
--Melvin Bell, Cyfair security officer, accused him of groping

"I think it's very important that people understand that this sexual abuse is something that should not be tolerated within our schools, yet we are finding it time and time again," Sanborn says.
