North Austin School Named After Longtime Educator

There's concern over the process of naming a new elementary school in North Austin along Rundberg Lane.

There were more than 20 different names nominated and there was actually some concern over the nominating process from a school board member.

On the nominating list was Juan Navarro, an army sergeant from Austin killed in Afghanistan last year. He was nominated, but according to a rule put in place with district a few months ago you have to have been deceased for at least 18 months before you can be eligible for that distinction.

At least one board member had concerns with that, especially since he died serving his country and was looking to have that changed.

In the end the district didn't make any changes but decided to name the school after a lifelong educator -- Doctor Janis Guerrero Thompson.

Thompson's husband says this isn't the first time she's been nominated.
