Cameras Multiplying APD Presence For SXSW
The Austin Police Department is multiplying their staff to prevent crime during South by Southwest with eyes on the ground as well as the sky.
Asst. Chief Raul Munguia says they will be using 31 cameras across the city.
"They can be in the corners, they can be in mid-block. They can be on top of buildings," said Munguia.
Officers will be looking for criminal activity, crowd control and emergency situations on the video.
"Police presence deters crime and especially if we know ahead of time where the crowds are going," said Munguia.
Their main concern is Sixth Street, but to keep a lookout for all areas they will be coordinating with event officials. Munguia says in the past there have been several surprise events.
"South by Southwest will relay that information to us ahead of time so we know if it's going to occur. And we will shift personnel beforehand," he said.
If a crime does occur police can use the video from the cameras as evidence.
APD tells us in the past property crime has gone up during this week. To keep your belongings safe, keep an eye on them, never set anything down and do not leave property in your car.
