Identities Released in Deadly Pace Bend Rd. Cliff Accident

The two men killed in a bizaar accident over the weekend have been identified.

According to the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, Sam Lane, 54, and Jim Mooney, 42, were killed when the vehicle they were traveling in went off a cliff and crashed 100 feet below.

The accident occurred late Saturday night, early Sunday at the cliff near a marina at the Resort Ranch, located at 1300 North Pace Bend Road.

Deputies responded to the scene, along with Austin Travis County EMS, Pedernales Fire Department, and DPS. They searched the area and found the truck with three people inside.

The two victims were found deceased in the truck. A third person was located, a 21-year-old man, who reportedly used a cell phone in the truck to call for help. He was transported to University Medical Center at Brackenridge by STARFlight and is in unknown condition.

The initial reports indicate that the men were driving along a dirt road inside the Resort Ranch property during a storm, with heavy rain, and went off a 45 to 60 foot cliff.

Sheriff’s Detectives, along with the Medical Examiner’s Office, will be conducting the investigation into the crash.
