Tips For Surviving A Tornado

Updated: Tuesday, May 21 2013, 04:06 PM CDT

You've seen the devastation the recent storms in Oklahoma can deliver. What should you do if one of those monsters hits when you're at home, in your vehicle or even outside?

If you're in your house or apartment, the safest place is in an underground shelter or basement. Your next best bet is a small, windowless room or hallway. Make sure you have shoes on your feet, a flashlight handy and radio to listen to alerts. Also, if you have a pet put them on a leash or in their carrier. Instead of covering yourself with a mattress, the National Weather Service recommends using a blanket to protect yourself from flying debris or glass.

"Another location we can find ourselves in is inside a vehicle," said Captain Josh Portie with the Austin Fire Department. "Get inside, cover yourself up with a blanket and protect yourself."

Capt. Portie also said to roll up the windows, lock the doors, turn on the radio for alerts and buckle up.

If you can safely get lower than the roadway, Capt. Portie said exit your vehicle, lie down and cover your head.

If you're outside without protection and can't get inside a building, Capt. Portie said to look for ways to block yourself from the high winds and debris. Find a corner of a building and get low.
